Issues With Food
Eating disorders are a mental health condition that can affect anyone. There is no specific body shape, gender or lifestyle that causes an eating disorder.
An eating disorder may be linked to other mental health issues such as stress, feeling low and anxiety. Every person reacts to circumstances and life events differently and as a parent/carer it can be hard to understand and know what is going on in your child’s life. Sometimes a young person’s behaviour around food can be caused by these circumstances as they try to cope and navigate their feelings.
With the correct support and professional help your teenager can recover from an eating disorder. The first step to accessing the appropriate support for your teenager is speaking to their GP or making a referral via My Self Referral.
If you are worried that a young person has been severely restricting their diet they should it is advisable for them to have their physical health examined by a medical professional.
