Exploitation and Grooming

Exploitation in young people is a real and serious issue. Young people can be groomed or exploited in many ways such as through online platforms, gangs and at public places where they spend time with their friends. Unfortunately, at times, people in positions of trust can also exploit or groom teenagers.

It is important that you are aware of the signs of child exploitation and grooming and what to do if you suspect something is wrong.

Exploitation and grooming could be happening without a young person recognising it; therefore it can be difficult for them to come to you and let you know what is going on.

There may not be visual physical signs of abuse. However, there may be signs in a young person’s emotional and behavioural actions.

Young people that are experiencing exploitation and grooming may seem willing to partake. A common theme throughout all forms of exploitation is the power and control a perpetrator has over the young person.
