International Youth Day 12th August

International Youth Day (IYD) is a day that was founded and sponsored by the United Nations over 20 years ago, with the first IYD being celebrated on the 12th of August 2000. Since then, it has been celebrated annually to raise awareness of youth challenges and to celebrate their achievements. Each year, there is a different theme which is celebrated and this year’s theme is ‘Different Contexts, Common Aspirations’.

This year's theme aims to highlight that whilst young people’s lives are shaped by different national and local experiences, their aspirations and goals are very similar. Millions of young people around the world are facing challenges including reduced access to education, barriers to employment, unequal digital connectivity and social exclusion.

Check out these ideas:

  • Join your local council or school council to be a part of changes in your local area and community.
  • Look for local volunteering opportunities. Volunteering is a great way to help others, build your confidence and boost your wellbeing through knowing you are making a positive difference to society.
